Darkness, my old friend tells the story of a tormented boy who rejects his fathers guidance and instead finds refuge in the darkness of night and the dreams it brings. He feels vindicated when he dreams he has been chosen to be Gods Apprentice and will be guided by Visions and Voices in using magic powers.
But when his father is murdered, he embarks on a tortuous journey to self-realization, beginning by duplicating some of his fathers experiences. While the experiences teach him to appreciate what his father had tried to teach him, they also convince him of his own sanity and the insanity of society.
Because he sees planned continental water diversions to grow new genetically engineered crops as a symptom of that insanity, he decides to complete his apprenticeship to God by helping his environmental activist lover and her group halt the diversions. His psychotic episodes make him believe he is solely responsible for the groups sabotaging the diversions and catastrophic natural disasters which destroy some of their infrastructure.
But he is angered by the medias ignoring his news releases, and as his lover becomes increasingly disillusioned and distracted by her own problems, he slowly begins to realize his real opponents are the demons within himself.
In a major psychotic episode he makes a spectacular effort to complete his apprenticeship but is it too late to finally find peace by pleasing his lover and completing his apprenticeship?
Or is darkness the only friend he has?
